In The Den: Huntingtown Hurdle

Welcome to week two of in the den. This week we have the visiting Huntingtown Hurricanes vs. the Patuxent Panthers. This game was another humid one, at kickoff, it felt like 90°. Even with the hot temperatures, it was a packed house on both sides of the field. Huntingtown won the coin toss and decided to defer to the second half. Patuxent decided to return the ball in the first half.

The second week started with a deep kick from the Hurricanes and a short return by the Panthers. Huntingtown was in for a treat this game. During the first three drives, Patuxent was able to stop Huntingtown each defensive drive. Tristin Borghothaus had an interception while the Hurricanes were in the redzone on their first drive. Plus, for the entire first quarter, the Panthers couldn’t be stopped from scoring. With two receiving touchdowns by the receiving core and a pic-six by Daquan Buck, this put the Panthers up 21-0 by the end of the first quarter.

With the second quarter rolling in, so was a storm. The game was not delayed thankfully, since it was too far away to be a problem. The incoming storm looked like it gave the Hurricanes a second wind. Within the last couple minutes of the second quarter, they scored two touchdowns. This made the game 21-12 going into halftime. With now almost a one-score game, the Panthers needed something to put them in front again. Sadly for the Panthers, the Hurricanes had used up the rest of the second quarter forcing the Panthers to go to halftime.

The fans were entertained by another great halftime show by the cheerleaders, marching band, and the dance team. With the second half underway, the Hurricanes scored right away to put the pressure back on the Panthers, and they got the two-point attempt. Putting the Hurricanes one point away from tying with Patuxent, 21-22. After this moment it was back-to-back scores by Huntingtown to put them in the lead 31-21. With the fourth quarter around the corner, PHS needed something big. The problem for the Panthers was that the third quarter was over and the final quarter of week two had begun.

With only 12 minutes left in the game, PHS down 31-27 against Huntingtown, the pressure was high. With great field position, the Panthers punched it in to take the lead, 35-31. With a little under 10 minutes left, the pressure was put back on the Hurricanes. The kickoff and defense of the Panthers forced the turnover on downs on the 20-yard line. As time was winding down, and Huntingtown running put of options, the quarterback throws it into traffic and Robbie Weir to get PHS the ball back. To end the game Evan Blouir ran it in for a 65-yard game-ending touchdown. With the final score being 41-31, Patuxent is now undefeated (2-0), and Huntingtown is now 1-1. The Panther’s next opponent is the Lackey Chargers at PHS on Thursday 9/14. The Hurricane’s next opponent is the Westlake Wolverines at WHS on Friday 9/15. For now, though, this is all from the den, see you next week.
