Jabril Daniels’ 5 rushing TDs power Fort Hill to third straight title
December 2, 2023
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Fort Hill (13-0) running back Jabril Daniels ran for over 300 yards and scored five touchdowns en route to a 45-21 Sentinels victory over Mountain Ridge (11-2) in the MPSSAA 1A State Championship game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Daniels would score early and often for Fort Hill, and the Sentinels carried a 5-touchdown lead into the half and eventually cruised to a victory in the second half.
The Sentinels got on top early, as Daniels broke free for a 63-yard score on the first play of the game. But, not to be outdone, Mountain Ridge answered right back with a score of their own. Quarterback Will Patterson connected with receiver Andrew Ketterman for a 73-yard score on the Miners’ first play of the game to even the score. But, it was all Sentinels after that point.
Before the first quarter would end, Daniels would score two more times – one from 42 yards, and one from 64 yards – to give Fort Hill a two touchdown advantage heading into the second.
Another Daniels rushing touchdown, coupled with a score from running back Tristan Ross would give the Sentinels a 35-7 lead into the final seconds before the half. And on the final play of the first half, Daniels would once again break free for a 59-yard scoring run as time expired. Fort Hill led 42-7 at the intermission.
Two touchdowns by Mountain Ridge’s Austin Frost and a two-point conversion pass from Patterson to Ketterman would account for all of the Miners offense in the second half, as they did not go quietly. Fort Hill would add a 29-yard field goal by Cooper Silber to cap the scoring for the game.
Jabril Daniels would finish the game with 20 carries for 302 yards and 5 touchdowns.
With the win, Fort Hill captures its third consecutive 1A State Championship, and its 10th overall title in school history. Its also the third straight 1A title game in which Fort Hill has defeated its Allegany County rivals.
