FREDERICK, Md. — Linganore (7-0) running back Bradly Matthews scored six times to help the Lancers outlast Middletown (5-2) in a 56-42 shootout win on Friday night in Frederick County.

A back-and-forth game was in doubt until late in the fourth quarter, when Linganore was able to gain a little bit of separation after a defensive stop turned the Knights over on downs.

The fireworks started early and often as the Lancers took the first play of the game 62-yards down the field on a pass from David Doy to Chase Perry and Linganore took the first lead of the game. But Middletown answered back on another quick drive of their own, capped by a short run by Ryan McLister to tie the game.

After a Doy interception, Middletown took advantage of the turnover, and QB Brittin Poffenbarger connected with Clinton Lee for an 80-yard TD pass. Linganore answered back as Matthews scored the first of his six touchdowns to tie the game once more.

Heading into the second quarter, Poffenbarger scrambled and scored from a yard out to give the Knights a 21-14 lead, and then Matthews responded with another short touchdown to tie the game again.

Matthews would add two more touchdowns before halftime, and Middletown added another passing score from Poffinbarger on 4th down to give the Lancers a 35-28 lead at the break.

Poffenbarger struck first for the Knights to start the second half as Middletown scored less than two minutes into the third quarter on a 27-yard pass to McLister to knot the score at 35-35, but only a minute and a half later, Doy hit Landon Allen over the middle downfield who ran 53 yards for a touchdown to give the Lancers the lead back.

Another 4th down conversion in Lancers territory led to a Middletown score as Poffenbarger connected with McLister for an 11-yard score, but, once again, Matthews scored for Linganore on the next possession to give the Lancers a 49-42 lead heading to the final quarter of play.

Defenses showed up somewhat in the fourth quarter, as both teams forced a punt, but Poffenbarger was sidelined with what appeared to be an injury in the final two drives, and the Middletown offense was not able to overcome his absence. The Knights drove into Lancers territory on the legs of McLister, but were turned away on downs by the Linganore defense. Matthews added his sixth and final score later in the quarter to give the Lancers a 56-42 victory.

Linganore returns home next week as the Lancers host Thomas Johnson, while Middletown returns back home to host Catoctin.
