North Point Pulls Away Late To Knock Off Huntingtown, 34-14

WALDORF, Md. — The North Point Eagles (6-0) used a few late scores to pull away from Huntingtown (4-2) with a 34-14 victory on Friday night.

The game was close throughout, highlighted by stout defense, and some sloppy offensive penalties, but North Point gained some much needed separation in the game’s final minutes.

Defensed were in control early as both teams were scoreless after the first quarter. North Point found the end zone first on an 8-yard run by QB Kyler Ferriera to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. North Point then took its next possession all the way down the field, but the Hurricanes defense stood strong and stopped the Eagles inside the 1-yard line on 4th down.

Huntingtown lined up inside its own 1, drew an offsides penalty on North Point to gain a little extra cushion, and on the next play, RB Gabe Copeland took a direct snap up the middle and wouldn’t be stopped until 94 yards later in the end zone. The Hurricanes tied the game at 7-7, which would also be the score at halftime.

North Point received the second half kickoff, and used a methodical drive, mostly on the ground, to eat up nearly half of the third quarter clock and score, this time on a 4-yard run by Ferriera. The extra point gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead.

After being forced to punt on their next possession, Huntingtown saw a high snap on a punt, and the ball rolled all the way back to the Hurricanes 5-yard line, where it was recovered by the Eagles. Ferriera scored on the next play to give North Point a 21-7 lead, and it seemed the Eagles would be in control.

But just over a minute later, Huntingtown broke another explosive play, as QB Dom Hickman connected with Xavier Jones for a 73-yard score, and the Hurricanes would pull back within one score at 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Eagles defense clamped down in the final quarter, and would not allow Huntingtown to score again. North Point had a long drive, in which it had two separate touchdowns called back due to penalties, but would eventually score on a third attempt, a 17-yard pass from Ferriera to Lawtrell Bowling, to go up 28-14. The Eagles added one final late touchdown on an interception return for a score of 64-yards by Josiah Eldridge-Scott to cap a 34-14 victory.

North Point returns to action next week with another home game against La Plata, while Huntingtown heads back home to face cross-county rival Patuxent.
