Calvert Earns Tough 20-7 win over rival Huntingtown
October 11, 2024
PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — In a game that saw just one offensive touchdown scored between both teams, the Calvert Cavaliers (5-1) leaned on their defense and special teams to secure a 20-7 victory over the Huntingtown Hurricanes (4-2) on Thursday night.
Despite being out-scored on offense 7-6, Calvert was able to clamp down on defense and largely limit Huntingtown on offense, force turnovers, and rely on its special teams to come up big. Calvert had three drives that ended in the red zone, and ended up fumbling on the first, and converting field goals on the next two.
Both teams would go scoreless in the first quarter. Huntingtown received the opening kickoff, and would punt to Calvert after not being able to move the ball. The Cavaliers moved the ball all the way up to the 1-yard line and had 1st and Goal. But the next play was a bad snap that was handled by quarterback Jordan Johnson, but he was stopped for a loss of two. The very next play, Calvert fumbled on a bad handoff to the running back, and the Hurricanes would recover.
Huntingtown nearly had a catastrophic turn of events on the ensuing possession, as, facing 3rd down and long, quarterback Dominic Hickman would scramble back into the end zone to attempt to avoid the pass rush, and he dropped the ball in the end zone, but luckily had it bounce right back to him, and he was able to gain enough forward momentum to prevent a safety. The Canes punted, and the Calvert returner reversed field and lost a significant amount of yardage. Huntingtown was able to flip the field even further as a penalty was tacked on to the end of the play.
The quarter ended in a scoreless tie, but Calvert would break the tie midway through the second quarter. Kicker Logan Artes would connect on a 25-yard field goal to put the Cavaliers up 3-0. Artes would add a second field goal, this time from 20 yards away, to extend Calvert’s lead to 6-0 with just under two minutes to play until the half.
Huntingtown went into two-minute offense and was able to move the ball up to midfield, but Hickman’s pass was intercepted by Calvert’s Brunsie Carrington as time expired, and the Cavaliers would take the lead into the break.
Calvert would start the second half with a bang, as the Cavaliers took the kickoff and momentum. Derrick Brown received the kickoff at the 10-yard line, got a few blocks, cut back to the left, and ran down the sidelines 90 yards for a score to open the half. It was a much needed start for Calvert, which was unable to do much on offense in the second half, and would possess the ball just one more time in the quarter, and go three-and-out.
Not to be outdone, Huntingtown embarked on its longest drive of the game which churned over 70 yards and chewed up over seven minutes of game time. The methodical march down the field was capped by a 1-yard touchdown rush by Hickman, and the Canes cut the Calvert lead to 13-7.
The score remained the same late into the fourth quarter. Huntingtown forced Calvert to punt, and the Canes took over around their own 40 yard line with just over two minutes to play. But on the first play of the drive, defensive back Xavier Jones intercepted Hickman’s pass and had a clear path to the end zone for a pick-six. Time would run out on the Hurricanes, and Calvert would take a gritty 20-7 victory.
Calvert returns to action next week and will stay at home to host Great Mills (2-4). Huntingtown returns home next weekend and will face Chopticon (0-5).
