Northwest remains undefeated, rolls past B-CC, 31-0

BETHESDA, Md. — In a game that featured two previously undefeated teams off to strong starts this year, the Northwest Jaguars (5-0) proved that they were just a bit stronger, as they defeated the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons (4-1), 31-0, to not only remain undefeated, but also remain un-scored-upon this season.

Northwest entered the game knowing they would be facing the unique look of the B-CC triple option offense, and early on the Barons were able to move the ball effectively. B-CC took the opening kickoff and reeled off several first downs to get the ball up to midfield. But ultimately, B-CC would fumble to end its opening drive, and give momentum back to the Jaguars.

On the ensuing possession, Northwest moved the ball successfully, and faced a 1st & Goal from the 2-yard line. But a holding penalty and a big loss on an end-around play backed the Jags back up outside the 25 yard line. On third down and long, quarterback Jayden Vongprachanh-Nelson evaded a sack, rolled out to his left, threw toward the end zone where two Jags receivers waited. The ball was tipped into the air, and both receivers had a chance to catch the pass, but the ball fell to the ground incomplete. Northwest would attempt a 37-yard field goal which was no good by kicker Sam McKinney.

After failing to score, Northwest would quickly get the ball back, and took over at the Barons 12 yard line after a penalty on the punt return. The Jaguars scored, but had the touchdown called back on an aiding the running back penalty. The drive stalled, but this time McKinney was good from 26 yards out to give the Jags a 3-0 lead which they would hold into the second quarter.

Just over halfway through the quarter, the Northwest offense finally broke the goal line. Vongprachanh-Nelson hit a deep ball to receiver Rahmise Jones for a 43-yard touchdown. Northwest would add one more score, as running back Van Mahoney reached the ball across the goal line for a 1-yard score, and the Jaguars led 17-0 at halftime.

B-CC successfully recovered an onside kick attempt to begin the second half. Quarterback Danny Hahn along with running backs Gabe Eisler and Lucas Scribner could seemingly not get the ball moving all night in their triple option attack against the stout Northwest defense. In its own right, the Barons defense played well, but was eventually worn down by the Jags offense.

The Jaguars would add two more scores in the second half: a 6-yard run by running back Hakim Duverna in the third quarter, and a punt return touchdown by Corky Lynch in the fourth quarter to take a 31-0 lead, and cruise to another shutout victory.

Northwest has now held its opponents scoreless over the first 20 quarters of play this season, and has out-scored its opponents 212-0. The Jaguars host Paint Branch (4-1) next Thursday. B-CC looks to bounce back as it hits the road to take on Wheaton (2-3).
